Daughter of Jangarh Singh Shyam and a prodigious Pardhan-Gond artist from Bhopal, blends her father's Jangarh Kalam with personal black-and-white motifs of animals, birds, and nature, honored with the Kamala Devi Award at age 11
Born in 1988 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, as the eldest daughter of pioneering Gond artist Jangarh Singh Shyam and Nankusia Bai—named "Japani" after her father's fascination with Japan—she began painting at age 7, assisting in his exhibitions and winning the Kamala Devi Award at just 11. Orphaned young after her father's 2001 suicide, she completed school till class 12 before pursuing art full-time, developing a distinctive style with white backgrounds, two-tone palettes (black and one color), intricate dots, and themes of wildlife, birds, and Gond folklore that honor yet diverge from Jangarh Kalam.
Her works have been exhibited in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bangalore, carrying forward the family legacy alongside brother Mayank while carving her own identity through minimalist, story-driven compositions rooted in tribal aesthetics. Living as a dedicated full-time Gond artist at 33, she emphasizes individuality, as taught by her father: create personal styles without copying, blending tradition with contemporary
